Memory Care Facilities

Memory Care Facilities

Memory care facilities are often components of larger assisted living facilities, and these units specialize in providing for the unique needs of patients with dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.  Unlike most other community options, memory care facilities offer “delayed egress,” meaning that the units are secure and locked to prevent a disabled resident from wandering away.  These facilities must provide a safe, secure, and compassionate environment in which the client feels completely at home.  Meanwhile, residents at memory care facilities will have the benefits of around-the-clock supervision and assistance.  Often these facilities offer one bedroom, two bedroom, and studio style units which bathrooms, closets, living room space, and sometimes kitchenettes.  Typically, residents may live alone or with a roommate.  Memory care facilities are often smaller and quieter to reduce commotion, disorientation, and stress on the clients, yet they often offer many different amenities, including restaurant or cafeteria-style dining, libraries, exercise equipment and fitness centers, scheduled entertainment appropriate for memory impaired individuals, and transportation.  These facilities offer all-inclusive services such as medication supervision, assistance with bathing and grooming, assistance with dressing, housekeeping and laundry services, incontinence care, one-on-one care, and assistance with ambulation.  More importantly, they are staffed 24-hours per day with personnel trained to meet the needs of their cognitively-impaired residents.  Unlike a skilled nursing facility, these institutions typically do not offer nursing care (such as intravenous medications and wound care), and these facilities often do not offer physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy.
