Independent Living Facilities

Independent Living Facilities

These facilities typically serve as an alternative living environment for those individuals of retirement age who are looking to minimize household worries while increasing their opportunity to live and interact with their peers.  Independent Living Facilities are typically larger residential communities in which relatively healthy seniors, without disabling medical problems, choose to live in apartment/dormitory-style accommodations or in bungalows.  These facilities should provide a safe, secure, and compassionate environment in which the resident feels completely at home, and they appeal to retired individuals looking to down-size and to reduce the burden of owning and maintaining a home.  Often these facilities offer one bedroom, two bedroom, and studio style units which contain full kitchens, one or two bathrooms, closets, and living room space.  Typically, residents may live alone or with a roommate.  Independent living facilities usually provide an array of amenities, including restaurant or cafeteria-style dining, libraries, scheduled entertainment, exercise facilities, and even transportation.  Unlike assisted living facilities and board and care facilities, services such as medication supervision, assistance with bathing and grooming, assistance with dressing, housekeeping and laundry services, incontinence care, one-on-one care, and assistance with ambulation are not typically available.  However, some facilities may offer some additional assistance on an as needed basis.  In contrast to skilled nursing facilities, these institutions typically do not offer nursing care (such as intravenous medications and wound care), and these facilities often do not offer physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy.

For a resident interested in the opportunity to interact with many different people, to enjoy many different amenities, and to have access to a variety of scheduled activities, independent living may be more appealing than smaller board and care facilities.  Many independent living facilities are affiliated with or connected to assisted living facilities so that if and when the need arises, the resident may advance to a higher level of care without significant lifestyle disruption.
