Board and Care Facilities

A board and care facility, sometime referred to as a “six bed,” is often a scaled down version of an assisted living facility, frequently located in home, and owned by an individual or family.  These facilities should provide a safe, secure, and compassionate environment in which the client feels completely at home.  The fact that these facilities are often based in regular houses and that they have a much smaller clientele can make them feel much more “homey” compared to larger facilities.  Typically, residents may live alone or with a roommate, and residents may share a bathroom.  Board and care facilities may include different amenities, including entertainment and scheduled activities.  Food at board and care facilities is usually home cooked.  Like other options for assisted living, board and care facilities usually provide medication supervision, assistance with bathing and grooming, assistance with dressing, housekeeping and laundry services, incontinence care, one-on-one care, and assistance with ambulation.  More importantly, they are staffed 24-hours per day with personnel trained to meet the needs of their residents.  Unlike a skilled nursing facility, these institutions typically do not offer nursing care (such as intravenous medications and wound care), and these facilities often do not offer physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy.

A board and care facility may appeal to a resident seeking a smaller, more home-like community in which lots of activities and social interaction is not as important.  Board and Care facilities may be less expensive than assisted living residences.
