Assisted Living Facilities or Assisted Living Residences or Residential Care Facilities

Assisted Living Facilities are typically larger residential facilities where people with different types of medical disabilities come to live in apartment/dormitory style accommodations or in bungalows.  These facilities should provide a safe, secure, and compassionate environment in which the client feels completely at home.  Often these facilities offer one bedroom, two bedroom, and studio style units which contain full kitchens, one or two bathrooms, closets, living room space.  Typically, residents may live alone or with a roommate.  These residential facilities may include many different amenities, including restaurant or cafeteria-style dining, libraries, exercise equipment and fitness centers, scheduled entertainment, and transportation.  Unlike most apartments, these facilities offer all-inclusive services such as medication supervision, assistance with bathing and grooming, assistance with dressing, housekeeping and laundry services, incontinence care, one-on-one care, and assistance with ambulation.  More importantly, they are staffed 24-hours per day with personnel trained to meet the needs of their residents.  Unlike a skilled nursing facility, these institutions typically do not offer around-the-clock nursing care (such as intravenous medications and wound care), and these facilities often do not offer physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy.  Some assisted living residences may have registered nurses or doctors on-site during standard business hours.

For an individual interested in the opportunity to interact with many different people, expecting to enjoy many different amenities, and desirous of having access to a variety of scheduled activities, assisted living may be more appealing than smaller board and care facilities.
